Trotwood is known as the home of the famous detective Thomas J. Cope. It is also said to be the childhood home of John Dorian from the hit television show Scrubs. The city is located west of Dayton in Montgomery County. The city has a population of more than 24,400. When it was settled in the early days, Trotwood was actually called “Higgins Station.” The city sits next to Clayton and Englewood. It was laid out in 1854. By 1901, the city was incorporated. In 1996, the village and township merged, which brought about the creation of a Trotwood neighborhood (known as Townview) that is completely surrounded by Dayton. In 2019, Trotwood sustained significant damage from an EF-4 tornado, which tore through the entire Dayton area causing serious damage. Trotwood had 500 homes damaged with another 59 homes destroyed. Forever known as the famous Memorial Day Tornado, this storm hit at 11 p.m., shortly after the National Weather Service announced the warning. Wolf Creek, which is a tributary of the Miami River, runs through Trotwood, offering locals and visitors a place to fish and enjoy nature and the scenery. Nearby is the only state park in Montgomery County, which is the 3,000-acre Sycamore Woods State Park. This state park offers horseback riding, hiking and camping. Additionally, Trotwood is also the home of the Hara Arena, where the annual Dayton Hamvention is held. Up until the Hara Arena closed in 2016 thousands of Amateur Radio Operators from around the world would attend this convention.
